Vagina!
Yes you heard me! A teacher in Idaho has come under fire for using this technical and descriptive term in class....sex education class. Yup, read all about it here.
Do you think it was appropriate for parents to complain?
WHAT. PEOPLE COMPLAINED ABOUT SAYING THE NAME OF A SEX ORGAN IN A SEX EDUCATION CLASS? That's not okay. This is why we need comprehensive sex (and gender) education.
I think that's pretty ridiculous considering it was a 10th grade sex-ed class. I was taught sex-ed in 10th grade as well and my teacher was pretty groovy and said all sorts of words like vagina because it's a class about anatomy! Maybe because I'm from New York which generally tends to be a bit on the liberal side, but I don't see the the harm in educating young adults about birth control. I guess things are just different in Idaho.
I think it is crazy how the parents of 10th graders were complaining about the teacher talking about sex organs in a sex education class. It blows my mind how parents think a teacher saying a word like "vagina" is inappropriate. The parents should know that words like "vagina" would be brought up in a sex education class. Isn't that the purpose of a sex ed class? I feel like parents will use anything to blame a teacher. Parents these days are way to over protective and too scared to take fault in their parenting skills. So instead of putting the blame on themselves they have to put it on someone else.
I think that the parent’s reaction was not necessary, taking into consideration that those are high school students, and that it was a biology class. I cannot think of another word better than vagina to explain the reproductive system of a woman. I would have loved to be there in that classroom to know exactly how the teacher was teaching the class, because I remember my biology teacher teaching the reproductive system and using words such as vagina and penis. The youth have to be addressed about sex and other “controversial” topics in a clear way, so I do not think there was anything wrong with the use of the word VAGINA!!!
